Ep 2: Why You’re Not Doing What You Know Would Help Your Business

Episode 2 of the Good Girl Rebellion podcast.

Why You’re Not Doing What You Know Would Help Your Business: How to Build a Resilient Mindset and Take the Next Right Step

You probably already know what would help your business, at least the next few steps. You’ve read the books, watched the webinars and maybe even made a plan. And yet… you’re not doing it, or at least not consistently. Maybe you get overwhelmed and find that you can’t even start. Or maybe you start and then stop.

This is something I see all the time, and it can lead to feeling shame. This episode is here to tell you why this happens and, more importantly, what to do about it. Because it does not mean that you are undisciplined, lack motivation or just need to try harder. It may feel that way from the inside but that’s not actually what’s going on.

Not being able to follow through in a way that actually moves the business forward is not a strategy problem.

It’s a mindset one.

What a resilient mindset actually means

A resilient mindset is not:

  • feeling confident all the time

  • being positive all the time

  • having no fear

  • getting everything right first time

It’s much simpler than all that. A resilient mindset is your ability to keep moving forward even when things feel uncomfortable, even when you’re unsure
and even when it’s not working straight away.

That’s it.

Why this matters in business

The problem is that being in business means that you need to:

  • make decisions without certainty

  • be visible before you feel ready

  • keep going without external accountability

  • tolerate things not working immediately

And for the good girls, this doesn’t come naturally.

Why do we find this hard?

We were trained to be responsible, prepared and approved of.

We were rewarded for:

getting things right
doing what was expected
not making things difficult

And those traits have served us, they really have. But they don’t always serve us in business because business doesn’t reward you for getting everything right.

It rewards you for:

showing up
trying things
making decisions
and continuing anyway, even when it’s messy.

So what happens instead?

Here is a list of things that happen. Which of these has happened to you? (It’s a trick question because my guess is all of them!)

  • you overthink

  • you second guess

  • you procrastinate

  • you wait to feel ready

  • you take another qualification or do more formal learning

  • you keep tweaking things behind the scenes

From the outside, all of this can look like a lack of discipline, but underneath it all, is fear.

A quick note on your brain

Your brain is wired for safety and not growth. You have a negativity bias (we all do) so anything that feels uncertain, visible, new and exposing triggers resistance to try to keep you safe. That doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong path, it usually means you’re doing something that matters.

good news - You don’t need to get rid of fear

This is where many people get stuck.

They think:

“I’ll do it when I feel more confident”

But confidence comes after action, not before. You don’t need your fear to disappear - you need to stop treating it like it’s the boss, the thing that gets to decide.

A question to come back to

When you notice yourself stuck, ask:

What is the next right step?

Not the perfect step or the full plan. Just the next one.

A personal note

Even with all my experience, even knowing how businesses grow, I still found myself stuck in this pattern myself. Overthinking decisions, holding things back and waiting until things felt ready.

What changed wasn’t becoming fearless - it was noticing the pattern… and moving anyway.

Again and again.

If this feels familiar

You’re not lazy or lacking discipline. You were trained for a different game and now you’re learning a new one.
